The newest addition to the El Paso Zoo is the Magellanic Penguin Exhibit. The penguin habitat will consist of an indoor-outdoor exhibit with naturalistic landscaping featuring a rocky bank, a snow-making machine, a wave-making machine, and other water features. There will also be a nesting area for potential breeding and penguin chick-raising. Life-support systems will include chilled salt and fresh ware, ozone or nickel treatment and purification, separate animal holding areas, freezers, and food preparation areas.

The project consists of demolishing, infilling, and regarding existing exhibits and constructing a new Penguin Exhibit and Life Support System. The design includes chilled freshwater systems for the main pool, quarantine pool, and holding pool; acrylic viewing panels, a rocky beach area with a peninsula that includes an underwater swim-through area, nesting boxes, back of house area that includes an office, quarantine pool, nursery pool, wet and dry storage, restroom, kitchen, and penguin holding. The area will also include the construction of a penguin encounter area with seating and wash down area for guests. The life support building will include a filtration and ozone system and a chiller for the exhibit water. Construction also includes bleachers, shade canopies for guests, and shade for the exhibit. New landscaping will be installed along with the protection of existing trees and plants. Installation of electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and IT systems also included in the project. The contractor will need to work closely with the zoo staff, architect, city arborist, and zoological society and always have zoo animals’ quality of life as a priority during the project.
